Local trains and BEST buses are considered the lifelines of Mumbaikars. However, with lakhs of people commuting every day, these modes of public mass transport system faced tremendous pressure of high passenger traffic load. The need to keep pace with the growing demand for more public transit alternatives and reduce traffic jams led to the genesis of the Mumbai Metro.

Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit system to serve commuters in Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The project was approved in 2004 but the construction was delayed for several years. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) launched the first metro on 8th June, 2014 on Line 1: Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar route.

Since then, it took another 8 years to commence other metro projects. Mumbai witnessed the partial opening of Line 2A: Dahisar-Charkop-Andheri West and Line 7: Dahisar (E)-Bandra (E) on 2nd April 2022. The construction of the Mumbai Metro on 8 lines is underway, 4 lines are approved and 2 are in the proposal stage. It is expected that overall completion will take place by 2026 in different phases. MMRDA owns all lines except Line 3 which is being owned by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation.

Such a massive scale of construction requires tonnes of steel which is being supplied by leading steel manufacturers and distributors in India. Steel is required to build coaches, corridors, depots, stations, etc. The usage of steel is high as it provides definite shape, volume and strength. However, it needs proper welding for toughness and durability. Hence, authorities have also deployed hundreds of welders for welding steel.

It is important to note that the quality of welding and overall construction depends on the quality of welding consumables such as electrodes. D&H Secheron, the leading welding material manufacturer in India is proud to be the welding consumable partner with Mumbai Metro.

We have provided, Norma and Supratherme electrodes for Mumbai Metro construction. Let’s learn more about these rods in detail.

Norma

Norma is a mild steel electrode designed according to AWS-E6013. The application of Norma is common in rail coaches, wagons, mild steel structures, ships, storage tanks, sheet metal work, etc.

Using Norma Electrodes in the construction of Mumbai Metro trains ensures the much-needed sturdiness and satisfies the design dimensions.

Supratherme

Supratherme is a medium and high tensile 7018 electrode. The use of supratherme electrodes is usually found in heavy structures subjected to dynamic loading and impact, highly restrained joints, coaches, wagons, penstocks, boilers, pressure vessels, earthmoving machines, etc.

Using supratherme electrodes in construction in Mumbai Metro rails is necessary for making structural steel shapes.
